A manual for high-level job transition that is helpful to anyone "in transition."

What Color Is My Parachute?, by Richard Nelson Bolles, published by 10-Speed Press. Also www.jobhuntersbible.com. Update many times since originally published in 1970, this book is full of great advice, solid process and valuable tips when conducting a job search.

The Riley Guide - www.rileyguide.com - a collection of links to articles on everything from preparing for a job search to writing a resume to targeting employers to negotiating an offer.

The Directory of Executive Recruiters 2002 (31st Ed), by Llc Kennedy Information (Compiler), Jennifer Shay and Wayne E. Cooper. Don't buy this book - you can find a recent copy at your local public library. It is a comprehensive listing of the 11,000+ executive search professionals currently operating in the United States, "slicing and dicing" by industry, functional and geographical focus.

Web-based Cost-of-Living Calculators are notoriously unreliable. Try them for yourself, but try several different ones at the same time - you can get variances of as much as 33%, which make it hard to know what the true cost-of-living differences are between two cities. If you use the high number, you may unnecessarily price yourself out of a position. If you use the low number, you may unknowingly be taking a step backwards in your standard of living.

We recommend doing more detailed research yourself:

1. Home costs are typically your largest differential. Make sure to factor in current mortgage rates. Property tax can also vary widely from state-to-state - note that many "State Income Tax-Free" states make up for lost income tax revenue with higher property taxes.
2. Taxes are typically the other significant differential. Know what your current tax rates are for state, local, school, property and sales tax, and find out what those tax rates are in the location you are considering. Make sure to include all taxes, then compare the two totals.
3. If you want to take a quick look at a Cost-of-Living Calculator, we recommend www2.homefair.com. There are many other valuable tools on this site as well.
